Kenya Academy of Sports National December Camp 2025 Successfully Launched at Hospital Hill High School and Lavington Girls
CS Sports Hon Salim Mvurya poses for a group photo with athletesThe much-anticipated Kenya Academy of Sports (KAS) Camp 2025 was officially launched with great enthusiasm and unity at Hospital Hill High School, the host for the boys’ camp, and Lavington Girls High School, the host for the girls’ camp. The vibrant ceremony was graced by the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya EGH, along with other distinguished guests including the Principal Secretary for Sports, Mr. Elijah Mwangi, CBS, the Chairman of the Kenya Academy of Sports Mr. Thuo Chege, the CEO of KAS, Dr. Doreen Odhiambo, the Secretary General of the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Mr. David Ngugi and Principal of Upper Hill School Mr. Maurice Okumu, a significant figure in Kenyan school sports.

During his address, CS Salim Mvurya expressed gratitude to His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Kenya Dr William Ruto, for his continued support in embracing and uplifting talent from the grassroots level. He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering excellence in sports, emphasizing that this camp would now be held every December, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, ensuring sustained growth and opportunity for our young athletes.

As part of the launch activities, the Cabinet Secretary toured the various sports disciplines where learners were actively engaged in training sessions. The disciplines included:
- Basketball
- Hockey
- Rugby
- Table Tennis
- Volleyball
- Chess
- Sitting Volleyball for physically impaired
- Goal Ball for visually impaired
The tours showcased the exceptional talent and dedication of the participating students as coaches and trainers worked to sharpen skills and build competitive spirit. CS Mvurya took the opportunity to encourage the athletes, reinforcing that sports can be a viable career path. He created awareness for the new government incentive structure for athletes representing Kenya internationally — with a gold medal now attracting KSh 3 million, silver KSh 2 million, and bronze KSh 1 million. This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to ensure that excellence in sports is both recognized and rewarded, promoting sports as a pathway to sustainable livelihood for talented youth.



In his remarks, CS Mvurya extended heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Ken Bunyasi, Principal of Hospital Hill High School, for offering the school’s excellent facilities and for demonstrating outstanding leadership, particularly with the newly constructed basketball court. He praised the institution for creating an environment conducive to the training and development of young athletes.
The Cabinet Secretary also acknowledged Madam Jane Mwangi, Principal of Lavington Girls High School, for graciously hosting the girls’ camp and providing invaluable support to KAS’s mission. Their contributions, he said, are pivotal in nurturing the next generation of sports champions.
Addressing the future of the camp, CS Mvurya assured participants that based on this year’s success, future camps will be extended from 10 to 14 days, allowing for more comprehensive training and development opportunities for all athletes.
The Kenya Academy of Sports Camp 2025 stands as a testament to the power of collaborative efforts between the government, educational institutions, and sports organizations in transforming the landscape of youth sports in Kenya. Through structured training, empowerment, and robust support systems, Kenya continues to invest in its greatest asset — its young sporting talent.
