1 remember my first day in school as a young boy, handed over by my parents to that loving, caring and inspirational teacher- teacher Lucy. She laid my intellectual, spiritual and moral foundation that to date I  look back and say  BRAVO!

To my primary school head teacher the late Mr Barnard  Mburu who taught me- Happy is the Man who acquires the habit of reading, he/she secures a treasure more precious than gold. My desire is to do just what my teachers did. There lies my professional thesis of service.

As a Deputy Principal at Hospital Hill High School, I resonate with the school motto- Aspire and Inspire, a task we have embarked to visualize and actualize as a school community.

On landing in the school, I received a hearty welcome from the Head of this auspicious institution the very able and focused Senior Principal Mr Kennedy S . Bunyasi.

He embraced my naivety and together with his brotherly and dedicated Deputy Principal Administration Mr Paul Mutemi, I hit the ground running and fitted squarely in my very first new role and office of the Deputy Principal Academics.

Sooner than later, the physical and curricular structures of the office were set and service delivery was at its optimum.

Thanks to the wonderful teachers, non-teaching staff and students.

Discipline.

Jesus taught his disciples the value of doing good through love. There we picked the principle of good discipline, for character makes a person they say. The school has taken an upward trend in discipline with a nose dive of cases of suspension. Kudos to my able colleague Mr Paul Mutemi and the school fraternity as a whole.

Good discipline presuppose academic excellence and no doubt this year we cannot but wait for the breaking news in the KCSE results come January 2023.

Academics.

As the Deputy Principal in charge of academics and through the guidance of the school Principal we have put in place structures and programmes that propel this institution towards our school motto Aspire and Inspire. We have an academic committee which comprises, the  Deputy Principal Academics who is the chair, the Dean of Studies – Mr. Denish  Nyagol, and the Deputy Dean of Studies  Mrs. Lydia Nyaga the ICT, Timetable and Exam co-coordinator. Mr. Yobes Munala assisted by Mrs. Judith Mosenya- HOS Chemistry.

The team ensures that the school's annual and termly examinations and academic programmes are in place right at the beginning of the term. They also co-ordinate the submission of exams, moderation of marking schemes and administration of the exams  KNEC Standards and finally the academic analysis.

Our results are released in a ceremonial academic assembly which captures the best subject, best class, best student and the most improved students.

The top 5 students in every Form are invited to a very sumptuous candle-lit Principal’s Dinner which every student aspires to attend. Once the results are released in the academic assembly, the same time parents receive the results online or through sms.

We hold academic meetings every fortnight- a meeting that is chaired by the Deputy Principal Academics and hosted by the Principal in attendance, Deputy Principal Administration, Senior Masters and all HODs, Subject heads, boarding and sports team.

In this meeting, we take stock of our academic progress from each subject and class level and make projections in syllabus coverage and other academic milestones.

After the Covid 19- pandemic, we have now re-introduced the academic clinics in which the parents, teachers and students have a field day forum to address all matters concerning the academic performance of their sons and thereby set the way forward.

To crown the school's academic commitment we have the school Board of Management Academic Sub-committee which is chaired by a very distinguished Professor of Science- Prof. Jackson Odote who articulates the academic issues at the management level. It’s here that issues of academics make the Principal who is the vision carrier work easily as he steers the school towards the mission of “ASPIRE AND INSPIRE.”

Academic achievements

Through the guidance of the school Principal, several remarkable milestones have been achieved. The introduction of Music as a subject in Form 1 and the introduction of IRE teacher, contributing to the improved mean grade in the respective levels.

Throughout the past few years, the school's mean grades have consistently been improving despite coming from a COVID-19 pandemic which had abnormal terms up to and including taking two KCSE exams in a single calendar year- April and December 2022.

Co-curricular Activities

I Am humbled to really appreciate the leadership of the BOM under the guidance of The Board of Management secretary-  K.S.Bunyasi.

At the beginning of the year 2022, the Principal tasked me to explore the avenues of tapping talents outside the academic programme. I took it up and with the school community’s support, we ventured into poetry (Mashairi)  set pieces and  Own composition pieces. This saw the school to the County,  Regional and National level of competitions bringing back magnificent trophies.

The school has grown with rips and bounds in sports and games lead by the head of the institution who is very passionate in the field. The student’s transversed all levels of competitions finally representing the County in the East African games in Arusha Tanzania coming back with an international magnificent trophy.

Conclusion

In “Clay Bedford’s “ words, You can teach a student a lesson a  day, but if you can teach him/her to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives”-  As a school, we desire to inspire our students to learn, unlearn and relearn. That way, they will be an inspiration to society today and the generations to come.

May God bless the work of our hands as we endeavour to transform our country’s social economic, spiritual and moral development through these young souls that he has bestowed on our hands.
